The 2023 Living Wage for Families BC report is out and, not surprisingly, the Living Wage in Nelson (and everywhere else in the survey) is higher than 2022.

The biggest increases in Nelson are rent and food, which are partly offset by reductions in childcare costs. See www.livingwageforfamilies.ca/livingwagecalculations2023 and https://policyalternatives.ca/publications/reports/working-living-wage-0 for more details.

The Living Wage is how much a worker needs to earn to pay for basic essentials like food and rent, along with the ability to have an active and fulfilling family and personal life. However, it is calculated using a basic budget that does not include paying off debt, savings for the future or the cost of caring for a loved one.
